Sensory vs. Behavioral Feeding: It is More Than Just "Picky Eaters"

Friday, 3:30pm to 5:00pm
Room L6-L7
Session 82
Feeding issues in children have many etiologies and implications. Positive and negative developmental experiences contribute to whether a child will have successful or challenging mealtimes. Sensory preferences and behaviors (negative or positive) can contribute to a successful or an unsuccessful eating with many consequences that can include malnutrition. This session will discuss the contributing factors to sensory and behavioral feeding disorders; will explore possible solutions and will focus on the importance of adequate parent training for more successful mealtimes. Finally, it will consider the role of the speech-language pathologist and the interdisciplinary approach that is needed to overcome (or at least attempt to) sensory and behavioral feeding disorders in children.
