Hearing Preservation in Cochlear Implantation

Thursday, 9:15am to 10:15am
Room L4-L5
Session 11
Cochlear implantation has revolutionized the management of patients with hearing loss. Technologic advancements and practice patterns have shifted dramatically and opened candidacy doors for many patients previously excluded from implantation. Preservation of residual hearing during cochlear implantation has been previously ignored; however, a conservation approach to hearing may offer implant recipients the potential of bimodal stimulation. This session examines the background of hearing conservation in cochlear implantation surgery and the trends in technology and surgical approaches to facilitate preserved function. Furthermore, this session will review current practice patterns in assessing patient candidacy and outcomes for cochlear implantation hearing preservation.
