Easy or Hard? Approaches for Children With Severe SSD, Part 1

Friday, 1:45pm to 3:15pm
Room 212-217
Session 71
This session will discuss intervention approaches for children with severe speech sound disorder (SSD) based on the theories and research described by Barbara Hodson (2007) and Judith Gierut (1989). The theoretical framework, procedures and outcomes research for both approaches will be described and practice in assessing a child's phonological error patterns, selecting targets and designing intervention will be provided. The presenters will compare and contrast the two approaches in relationship to theories of learning efficacy and efficiency of intervention and will discuss factors to consider in selecting an approach, as well as ways in which elements of the two approaches can be combined during intervention.
