Assessing Hearing Protectors in the Clinic: CPT Code 92596

Friday, 8:00am to 9:00am
Room L4-L5
Session 49
The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) published on the package of ear protectors has long been known to overestimate the actual performance that individuals receive in the field. Derating the labeled NRR can be too conservative in some cases and has little predictive value in other cases. If you have a sound-field system, you can assess the attenuation of ear protectors. But determining a patient's NRR (called the Personal Attenuation Rating or PAR) is time consuming and difficult... until now. In this session, we will demonstrate how a Microsoft Excel template can be used to quickly assess a protector's performance and interpret its protective value for a specific noise environment.
