Nurses (RNs) in the hospital setting have a significant amount of exposure to patients who may have persistent or newly acquired communication barriers. In order for the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to be prepared in facilitating communication, knowledge of communication barriers and the types of facilitators used is essential. Previous research in this area looked at communication barriers from a general perspective with limited relation to the role of the SLP. A survey was conducted in order to determine the most frequently occurring communication barriers and facilitators within adult patient care from a sample of RNs within the state of New Jersey. Future research recommendations and implications for SLPs are discussed.
