This research was created to provide insight into the factors that deter students from allied health graduate professional preparation programs (physical therapy and occupational therapy) from choosing Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) as a professional career. An online survey was created using Qualtrics, a third-party survey platform, and distributed to graduate students in occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) departments of collegiate institutions across the United States. A total of 47 students participated in this study, 29 students from PT and 18 students from OT. Quantitative and qualitative results were gathered and analyzed. Results demonstrated that the top five factors that hindered graduate students from choosing SLP were: lack of interest in speech, lack of interest in communication disorders, emphasis on speech/language classes, type of work you would do as a SLP, and the scope of practice.
