ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons innervating movement, speech and swallowing muscles. More recent research shows that cognition, and more specifically working memory (WM), is also affected in ALS. Changes to WM can have a negative impact on patients' ability to store, process, and recall information - processes that are critical for communication. According to a dominant WM model (Baddeley, 2000) there are several systems involved in the processing of short-term verbal and visual information; however, there is limited research on the systems that are affected in ALS. The objective of this study is to identify WM components that may be affected in patients with ALS.
