Missouri State University's Communication Sciences and Disorders department initiated a study away trip to Nicaragua in March 2012. The trip initially focused on preforming hearing screenings and providing hearing aids to individuals in rural communities throughout Nicaragua. Since that initial trip there have been four additional trips and with each new trip the objectives of the Nicaragua Study Away program have expanded. In October of 2014, an objective of the trip was to provide three educational workshops to the teachers and parents of children with special needs. This presentation will provide information on two of these workshops. The first workshop focused on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) while the second focused on the use of visual supports and social stories for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The presentation will describe participant recruitment, development of culturally sensitive content, translation and interpretation needs, methods for obtaining feedback from participants and strategies for future collaborations. Specifically, information will be provided regarding the development of appropriate materials for AAC and ASD interventions in a developing county.
