Given the interdisciplinary history of dysphagia care, mutual respect and cooperation between disciplines is an ongoing necessity. This international study extended a previous one of Missouri-based SLPs' perceptions. It explored the nature of speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') relationships with radiologists through the lens of SLPs who conduct videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS). A 38 item survey was distributed to explore patterns of collaboration between SLPs and radiologists for the purpose of elucidating areas of strength and potential growth. A total of 183 SLPs from five countries and 37 North American states participated in the survey. Overall, SLPs tend to work with radiologists on a weekly or monthly basis. Although results indicated that a level of disagreement or resistance exists between the two professions especially regarding esophageal assessment procedures. SLPs view radiologists as knowledgeable, responsive, helpful and important assets to clinical practice. An increased number of opportunities to attend workshops aimed at mutual understanding, interprofessional education and collaboration would likely strengthen the relationship between SLPs and radiologists, which could lead to more effective and efficient assessment of dysphagia.
