The Reliability of Perceptual Speech Analysis in Diagnosing/Measuring Treatment Progress

Friday, 5:30pm to 6:30pm
Windgate Hall
SP23
There has been much debate over the reliability of perceptual speech analysis in detecting the presence of a disorder or analyzing the severity of its characteristics. The use of perceptual speech analysis in diagnosing and measuring treatment progress affects both the accuracy of care planning and treatment reimbursement. At this time, perceptual measurements are still considered the gold standard (Duffy, 2012) in many avenues of speech based assessments. However, perception is a subjective scale, so the idea of using it as a means of diagnosing communicative disorders has received much contradiction. The purpose of this study is to examine the reliability of perceptual speech analysis when rating the severity of communicative disorders.
