Preschool Social Language Group: Getting Started

Saturday, 2:30pm to 4:30pm
Crystal Ballroom
Session 42
A subset of preschool age children, who do not necessarily have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, may exhibit difficulty making friends or working in peer groups due to deficits in social communication abilities. By participating in a social communication group, preschool to kindergarten age, children can learn social communication skills that will help them to interact with peers. The purpose of this session is to help clinicians understand the skills that young children need in order to successfully interact in peer groups and the methods used to target those skills in order to make observable gains in the client's social interactions. Practical examples will be given on how to target social communication goals in preschool age children. Specific strategies and treatment methods will be discussed and participants will have the opportunity to observe and analyze case examples. Participants will walk away from this session understanding the steps required to initiate a preschool social communication group.
