Non-traditional students are a growing trend in higher education, and the communication disorders field is no exception. The National Center for Education Statistics defines a non-traditional student as a student who does not enter college immediately after high school, is not financially dependent on parents, has a spouse or children or is over the age of 25. This poster challenges the typical definition of a non-traditional undergraduate and graduate student as it relates to the speech-language pathology academic environment and profession. The author suggests non-traditional students are an untapped resource of experience and knowledge. Their life skills and the challenges they have overcome contribute to their success, not only as a student, but also specifically as a future speech-language pathologist. The author further suggests colleges and universities may benefit from marketing more to non-traditional students, further enriching the future pool of new SLPs.
