Negative Behavior and the Role of Communication: An ABA Perspective

Saturday, 10:15am to 12:15pm
Rooms 62/63/64
Session 36
Individuals of every age and skill level exhibit negative behavior. Our students, children, friends, family and yes even us from time to time. Negative behaviors have been found to frequently be rooted in a few primary functions. Functional communication training (FCT) is one of the most common and effective interventions for problem behaviors that range from mild (ex. not attending in class) to severe (ex. biting, hitting, scratching, etc). Despite the connection between communication and behavior, the SLP is frequently not involved in evaluating and changing problem behavior. This session will serve as an introduction into the functions of behavior, identifying the function of a behavior and the role of the SLP in assuring appropriate communication targets are selected.
