This session will discuss the ways in which speech is perceived as masculine or feminine, and how gender perception of someone's speech is influenced by pitch and cultural gender differences in language, word choice, suprasegmentals and non-verbal communication. An overview of speech-language and voice therapy for individuals who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming and want to work toward raising or lowering pitch and adopting masculine or feminine speech and communication behaviors will be provided. Anatomical differences between the male and female vocal mechanism and cultural gender differences will be discussed, how to choose a realistic target pitch and choosing practice words and sentences will be explored with an emphasis on good vocal hygiene and realistic expectations and potential for improvement.
