Salon A
Session 35
The Aphasia Boot Camp held at Fontbonne University each summer is a unique clinical setting in which individuals with aphasia undergo six weeks of intensive group and individual therapy. Each client received two hours of one-on-one therapy each day that was specifically tailored to that individual to target cognitive and communication skills. The clients also participated in one hour of group therapy that provided a social learning environment. Group activities were modified to follow the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) principles to increase clients' motivation and carryover of skills to everyday life. Several factors were identified as being beneficial for creating a successful group environment such as client selection, activity selection and activity modification. This session will discuss factors involved in providing group therapy, planning group therapy session and describing cognitive/linguistic activities used during group therapy (e.g. Reminiscence Therapy, Apples to ApplesTM and Go Fish). The cognitive and communication demands and goals for each activity will be discussed and presented in video examples.
