This study presents the results of a systematic review of the literature examining the impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the frontal lobe on the impairment of executive functions. A comprehensive electronic and hand search of the literature published between 2003 and 2013 was performed to identify current and relevant research from peer-reviewed journals. All studies meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were evaluated for quality and ranked according to the Levels of Evidence provided by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The review of literature identified seven studies related to the research question, involving 169 participants who had experienced TBI specifically in the frontal lobe. The seven studies also identified 73 control group participants that were matched based on gender, age and level of education. Most of the studies had significant methodological and clinical limitations based on study design. Results of the review indicate that TBI in the frontal lobe has significant impact on the impairment of the various aspects of executive functions including compulsive behavior, impulsivity, risk taking, emotional status and control and social judgment and awareness. Additional evidence-based research is needed to determine appropriate intervention for rehabilitation of frontal lobe injury.
