The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of positive reinforcement on spontaneous verbalizations (gestures, ASL signs, speech, etc...). The researcher used a single-subject (ABA) design for the study. The participant of this study was a client in the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Truman State University. An initial baseline was established over the course of three sessions to determine the client's abilities to use verbalizations pre-treatment. Three different activities: bowling, grocery shopping and story-telling, were used throughout the course of establishing baseline. Positive reinforcement of stickers were implemented during the treatment phase of the study. The withdraw portion consisted of taking away the positive reinforcement and continuing taking data on amount of spontaneous verbalizations. Results suggested that the positive reinforcements created an increase to spontaneous verbalizations.
