Cleft Palate Speech for EI and School SLPs: A Summary

Sunday, 7:15am to 8:15am
Windgate Hall
PP4
Although assessment and treatment of children born with cleft lip/palate or craniofacial disorders has become a specialized area of speech-language pathology, the treatment team should include the child's EI and/or school SLP, who may or may not have specialized training in cleft palate speech. This poster draws consensus from four major textbooks and serves as a concise, practical guide to cleft palate speech for SLPs working in schools and early intervention settings. The following information is provided: key concepts of assessment, treatment and outcomes; when and why referral to a cleft palate team is appropriate and how to find a local team; examples and etiologies of common cleft-related speech-sound errors; and specific assessment and treatment techniques.
