Camp SOCIAL: Shaping the BIG PICTURE!

Sunday, 10:30am to 12:30pm
Crystal Ballroom
Session 65
Camp SOCIAL is an innovative, therapeutic summer camp facilitated by speech-language pathologists in Southeast Missouri. Camp Staff uses evidence-based cognitive behavioral and social cognition interventions in fun, engaging ways. Camp content is strategically designed to enhance social awareness (including executive functions) of high-functioning individuals presenting with social (pragmatic) communication deficits typical of Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), Language Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (NVLD) and ADHD (non-exhaustive listing). Through the clever use of graphic organizers, hands-on activities (e.g., SOCIAL Science, EXPRESS Yourself, Under Construction, POWER Up!) and experiential technologies (e.g., Wizard of TECH, Movie Time(C)), campers are afforded concrete interactions (high interest, gross motor, fine motor) with social-cognitive abstractions (e.g., hidden curriculum, perspective taking, use of eye gaze, body language, emotions, problem solving, self-regulation, meta-linguistics, planning/prioritizing, organization, persistence, motivation, etc.).
