Serving Students With Severe Disabilities and Complex Communication Needs

Thursday, 9:15am to 10:45am
Room 212-217
Session 14
Students with the most significant disabilities and complex communication needs (CCN) pose special challenges to speech-language pathologists. This session will present current data on communication needs of such students, present a simple descriptive tool to assist school-based teams to identify and agree upon each student's current communication level and offer evidenced-based strategies for embedding communication into the academic setting. Video examples will provide practice for participants in analyzing the communicative output and intents for students with significant disabilities who are non-verbal. Multiple intervention strategies drawn from the literature from a highly effective, evidence-based state-wide initiative will be presented. Nine specific intervention strategies will be described. Discussion of methods to integrate appropriate communication programming into the academic content will also be offered.
