Identifying Dyslexia in the Classroom, Part 1

Friday, 1:45pm to 3:15pm
Room 219/218
Session 72
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are uniquely qualified to identify red flags for reading disorders and dyslexia. A complete anatomy overview will explain the genetic makeup of dyslexia, what constitutes proper assessment and what best-practice intervention models are. Warning signs will be discussed from birth through adulthood, with emphasis on the role of early identification. SLPs providing First Steps services are the first line of defense, but may not be aware of the warning signs. School-based SLPs will learn what a mild, moderate and severe student looks like in the classroom. Learn how to collaborate with the classroom teacher and help with classroom accommodations.
