Friday, 9:45am to 11:15am
Room 207-209
Session 61
This session will describe the Hanen approach to parent-implemented intervention for children on the autism spectrum. It will include an outline of More Than Words(R) - The Hanen Program(R) for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a manualized parent-implemented intervention. The instructional model on which this program is based involves explicit teaching and coaching, using an approach that draws upon best practice in adult education. Specific techniques and learning activities that the SLP uses to facilitate parents' acquisition and generalization of responsive strategies will be covered. Selection of the child's communication goals in collaboration with parents will be discussed in terms of how these goals support next steps in the child's development of social communication skills, while accommodating sensory preferences.
