There has been very little past research evidence on comorbidities or common impairments of voice in Paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction (PVFD). Past research has found that patients with PVFD present with shortness of breath during physical exertion that can be accompanied by wheezing and stridor as a result of adductory motion of the vocal folds during inhalation. PVFD is not a commonly understood disorder, which often leads to an incorrect diagnosis of "sports-induced" asthma and insufficient treatment plans. The current time between diagnosis and onset of patients with PVFD is often extended due to misdiagnosis and lack of knowledge about the disorder between patients and primary care physicians. Knowledge about possible comorbidities associated with PVFD could potentially lead to an easier and more accurate differential diagnosis of the disorder contrasted to asthma. Through this critical appraisal, there is evidence to suggest that there are common impairments of voice or comorbidities such as GERD, asthma, allergies, laryngeal inflammation in individuals with PVFD.
