Breastfeeding and Infants With Lip and/or Tongue Ties

Friday, 11:30am to 12:30pm
Room 201/202
Session 66
As speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with infants with feeding and swallowing difficulties, the role is rapidly increasing to encompass many infants having challenges with breastfeeding. The world of lactation specialists has increased its awareness of infants with ankyloglossia and/or labial frenulum ties. Increased awareness of these difficulties has begun to improve success rates of infants' ability to breastfeed (and often improved bottle feeding skills as well). This area of feeding and swallowing is quickly becoming a hot topic for disciplines such as lactation, pediatric dentists, speech-language pathologists and ear nose and throat specialists. With this early identification, infants can become more successful breast and bottle feeders and receive the appropriate intervention to improve these skills.
