Apps for Vocabulary Assessment and Intervention

Friday, 10:00am to 11:30am
Room 210/211
Session 62
Vocabulary words used to teach and assess children may be divided into three types; Beck, McKeown and Kucan (2002). These distinctions are referred to as tiers. Tier one words are the most basic words - the early reading words, sight words, nouns, verbs and adjectives that students learn. Tier two words are the high frequency words that are found across many domains. They play a large role in our speaking and reading vocabularies and often represent multiple meanings and subtle nuances. Tier three words are those related to specific domains such as subject areas in school, hobbies, geographic regions, technology, weather, etc., and have a low frequency of use. Technology is an ever-increasing component of learning and students of different ages, backgrounds and cognitive levels can benefit from apps to support and develop their vocabularies. iPad apps currently available on the market to directly address vocabulary or that can be adapted to reinforce vocabulary will be demonstrated.
