Addressing Communication Needs in Children Who Have Moderate to Severe Cognitive Impairment

This session will discuss addressing the communication needs of children who have moderate to severe cognitive impairments. Emphasis will be placed on using collaborative team approaches to treatment, where communication intervention is provided by all members of the educational team throughout the school day to achieve the child's maximum communication potential. Guidelines for provision of speech-language therapy as a related service, developing the IEP and programming suggestions will be discussed. Examples from programs currently utilized by the presenter will also be shared with participants.
